Under the Shadow of the Moon

by George Plautz

As I leave the café,
I think of my past.
It’s a long journey
in my unsteady mind,
and the moon is not there
to light my way. Desires
once evoked by the stars,
have remained unfulfilled.
Is it only me, or is that the way
things have to be?
As the cosmos spins
like a sandstorm
toward its final destiny,
a blackbird suddenly flies
from a box elder tree.
Where is he going?
What does he see?
He blends into the night,
and like this whirling cosmos,
he doesn’t have anything
to do with me.
