Fear
by Zhenya Yevtushenko
after Donnie Darko
I asked my fear
atop a mountain overlook
“Where do you go
at night?” - in my voice
it spoke “I go
to every doorslam
like earth to an earthquake, like
a plan to a planecrash, like
emptiness deafening a mailbox, I go
to where every creature dies
alone – those who did & didn’t control
me, from the first man & the last
unicorn to every antichrist & superhero – they all thought
they were alone – but I was watching -
if the sky
is going to open up
will you check to see if the door
is unlocked?”
is going to open up
will you check to see if the door
is unlocked?”
